Reverse Tax Guide

Disclaimer

Clear reverse-tax guidance with formulas, examples, and calculator links for tax-inclusive totals.

Reverse Tax Calculator provides general calculation support and educational information. The site does not provide tax, legal, accounting, filing, payroll, audit, investment, or financial advice.

Use the calculator to understand reverse tax math. Do not use calculator output as a substitute for official guidance or professional advice.

Tax-law reviewer candidates are identified on the Tax Reviewers page only. No page should claim expert review or approval unless written approval and review sign-off are obtained.

Calculator Results Are Estimates

Calculator results depend on the values entered by the user.

A result may be incomplete or unsuitable for official use if:

  • the tax rate is wrong;
  • the transaction date matters;
  • local, state, provincial, city, or district tax applies;
  • some items are exempt or zero-rated;
  • multiple rates apply;
  • taxes are stacked or compounded;
  • shipping, tips, fees, deposits, discounts, gift cards, or refunds are treated differently;
  • the receipt uses line-level rounding;
  • the seller, marketplace, or point-of-sale system uses a different method.

Example: a total of $108.00 at 8% reverses cleanly to $100.00 before tax and $8.00 tax included. That same $108.00 total may not reverse cleanly if it includes a $20.00 exempt item, a taxable delivery fee, and a discounted item.

No Professional Advice

Reverse Tax Calculator does not decide:

  • whether a product or service is taxable;
  • whether a person or business must register for tax;
  • whether tax must be collected, remitted, claimed, refunded, or reported;
  • whether an exemption applies;
  • how a tax return should be filed;
  • how a journal entry should be recorded;
  • how payroll, income tax, VAT, GST, HST, PST, QST, or sales tax rules apply to a specific user.

Contact the relevant tax authority or a qualified professional for advice about your situation.

Official Sources Control

Tax rates and taxability rules can change. Local rules may also be narrower than a general calculator example.

Before filing, charging, refunding, claiming, reimbursing, or reporting tax, verify the rule with official sources. Examples include the Internal Revenue Service and the Canada Revenue Agency.

The site may link to official sources, tools, articles, or third-party websites. External links are provided for reference.

Reverse Tax Calculator does not control third-party websites and does not guarantee their content, policies, availability, or accuracy.

No Warranty

The site is provided for general information on an "as is" and "as available" basis. We aim to keep formulas and explanations clear, but we do not guarantee that every result, rate note, source link, example, or page is complete, current, uninterrupted, or suitable for a specific purpose.

User Responsibility

Users are responsible for:

  • entering the correct amount and rate;
  • checking whether a total contains one tax rate or several tax treatments;
  • verifying official rules before relying on a result;
  • keeping their own records;
  • deciding whether professional advice is needed.

If you find a possible error, report it through the Contact page. Correction handling is explained in the Corrections Policy.
